The group was founded in 1934 by Mr W Recher and was known as 1st McKinnon until 1950. As part of the formation of the City of Moorabbin District, the group was given the name of 7th City of Moorabbin. The first hall was built at the group's current location in 1958 and officially opened by the then Chief Commissioner of Victoria, Major-General RJ Risson and dedicated by Rev RG Butler.
In 1963, with a change in Districts to North Moorabbin, the group's name was changed to 7th North Moorabbin. With an increase in the number of boys waiting to join scouting in the area, the group was split with the formation of 6th North Moorabbin. Both groups continued to share the same hall.
The hall being extended in the late 60's adding a Stage area and meeting room area at the front of the hall.
In 1973, with dwindling numbers and lack of leaders to run two groups, the groups combined and continued under the name of 6th North Moorabbin (McKinnon). A request to alter the name officially to be 1st McKinnon being rejected at this point in time.
In 1974, a disaster struct the group when the Hall was destroyed by fire. Only the Kitchen, Toilets and rear storage areas remained from the original hall. The group, with the support of the Church of England in Ormond, met at the Church's hall until the Scout Hall could be rebuilt. In 1976, the rebuilding of the hall and new dens for each section were completed.
At this point in time, the group had members in all sections, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers. The Rover Crew was one of the first in the state to accept Females into the Crew when first permitted in 1975. The Venturer Unit also followed suit soon afterwards.
With increasing numbers on the waiting lists in the 1980's, the group started up a second Cub Pack to cope with the demand. However, due to lack of leaders and a fall in the waiting list, the Packs were combined.
The group name was finally changed back to 1st McKinnon in 1994 after repeated recommendation of the District Commissioner of the City of Moorabbin District.
